En ese entonces, un año antes para ser exactos, Bowie apenas había sacado un disco, y sin mucho éxito. En abril de 1968, llegó a las salas de cine la película de Stanley Kubrick ‘2001: Odisea del espacio’, pocos meses antes de que el músico lanzara ‘David Bowie’, su álbum de debut, que salió a la venta en junio de 1968.

Bowie vio la película de culto de Kubrick y las imágenes le prendieron el bombillito de la creatividad. Entonces, creó su icónica canción ‘Space Oddity’ (“ground control to major Tom”). Sin embargo, quería aprovechar el momento exacto para el lanzamiento del sencillo. Para ello debía aprovechar el lanzamiento del Apolo 11, y por eso le presentó su canción al mundo 5 días antes.

Y, en cierta medida, le funcionó, porque la cadena BBC usó ‘Space Oddity’ para ambientar la transmisión del alunizaje, el 20 de julio de 1969, aprovechando la temática de la canción. Desde entonces, el mundo supo quién era David Bowie, que lanzó el disco ‘Space Oddity’ en noviembre de ese año.

Un nuevo video para una canción espacial

Como conmemoración del cumpleaños 50 de los dos importantes eventos, la llegada del hombre a la Luna y el lanzamiento de ‘Space Oddity’, la Nasa presentará un nuevo video para esa canción de David Bowie en el Kennedy Center, en Washington, precisamente el 20 de julio, como parte del evento de conmemoración del medio siglo del primer alunizaje.

NEW SPACE ODDITY VIDEO AT NASA EVENT “Planet Earth is blue…” A new David Bowie video for the 1969 breakthrough single Space Oddity will be premiered at a NASA event at The Kennedy Center in Washington on 20th July. The premiere will commemorate 50 years since Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, as well as the 50th anniversary of Space Oddity’s original release. The video features footage of David Bowie performing Space Oddity at his 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997 (directed by Tim Pope), married to footage shot and directed by Édouard Lock (the founder and choreographer of the Montreal dance troupe La La La Human Steps), for the onscreen back drop of Bowie’s 1990 Sound & Vision tour. Este nuevo video, que estará disponible en YouTube luego de su lanzamiento, mostrará imágenes inéditas de Bowie interpretando ‘Space Oddity’ durante su concierto de cumpleaños 50, en el Madison Square Garden, en Nueva York, en 1997.

Además, incluye imágenes filmadas y dirigidas por Édouard Lock, coreógrafo y fundador de la compañía de danza La La La Human Steps, que se usaron en las pantallas de la gira Sound & Vision, que Bowie hizo en 1990, mientras el músico interpretaba ‘Space Oddity’. Una actuación que se replicó en su cumpleaños 50.

El evento será presentado por Adam Savage, de ‘Mythbusters’, y contará con la presencia de Pharrell Williams, Mark Armstrong –hijo del fallecido Neil Armstrong– y astronautas de la Estación Espacial Internacional. Los asistentes verán, además, el estreno de un nuevo trabajo de Michael Chiacchimo (‘UP’, ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Misión Imposible’ y ‘Star Wars; Rogue One’), el compositor ganador de un premio Óscar.

SPACE ODDITY SINGLE IS FIFTY TODAY “Blastoff…” David Bowie’s 1969 breakthrough single, Space Oddity, is fifty today (Thursday 11th July). The review in our montage from the July 12 1969 UK magazine Disc and Music Echo, was by Penny Valentine (a long-time champion of the unknown David Bowie), who starts her appreciation thusly: “I have a bet on in the office that this is going to be a huge hit and knock everyone senseless. There are disbelievers among us!” Well, Penny may have worried she was going to lose her wager for the first few months, but hopefully she collected big time when the record eventually peaked at #5 on the official UK singles chart in November 1969. As you know, her predictions would be further cemented when the 1975 reissue of the song gave Bowie his first #1 in the UK. Stay tuned for some fun Space Oddity related goings on. #SpaceOddity50

La música que acompaña al nuevo video de Bowie es una nueva mezcla de 2019 de ‘Space Oddity’, hecha por Tony Visconti, productor del músico británico, que fue lanzada el 11 de julio como parte del boxset del aniversario 50 de la canción, que contiene dos sencillos de siete segundos.

Esta edición de aniversario incluye un póster a doble cara con un anuncio original de ‘Space Oddity’ y una foto de Bowie en el escenario, mientras interpretaba esa canción en el concierto Save Rave de noviembre de 1969, en el London Palladium, con un telón de fondo que tenía la imagen de un astronauta de la Nasa. La fotografía fue tomada por Ray Stevenson.
